Picked up a low time PS2 5v MTH F59 20-2320-1 from 2001 that worked well other than scratchy sound quality. Replaced battery, cleaned up old speaker that had light metal flaking, no sound improvement. Got a replacement MTH 16 ohm 5w speaker BF-0000033, carefully soldered connections and routed wires to avoid shorts. Powered up and immediately tripped the circuit breaker and got a puff of smoke. Pretty sure the audio amp part of the board is gone? Speaker may have been defective from the beginning but that is water under the bridge. The engine still runs normally, lights work, couplers work, smoke unit works, responds to all DCS remote commands with the speaker removed and wires isolated. My question is "Can I still run this engine without the speaker installed if I isolate/insulate the speaker wires from any possible short/ground?" The engine runs as part of a lash up so sound isn't required. If running it isn't a good idea, what options do I have for repair/upgrade?

I suspect any damage that was coming is done. FWIW, I have the amplifier chips for those, that's actually one part that is not that hard to replace.
I'm with John, the amp chips are easy to replace if you want to. But given the way you plan to use it, I'd say remove the speaker and insulate any of the unused connections and go for it.
Thanks for the quick reply. The replacement speaker came from a reputable supplier but looked like it had been repaired at some point, most likely from the factory. I failed to check it before installing it but after removal it has no continuity at all. The original speaker still checks ok at around 16 ohms and I'm toying with reinstalling it to see if the small amount of smoke I got came from the replacement speaker or the board itself. Am I asking for more trouble or is this a reasonable attempt at troubleshooting?
If you're going to try a speaker, use a new one, don't risk that flaking one.
Thanks everyone, I decided to isolate and insulate the speaker wires and remove the speaker. So far the engine runs fine in its lash up minus the sound.
