Can I use either of these transformers?

Well, they're DC and very low power, I'd probably look for a standard AC transformer with a bit more current capability.  You can pickup something like the Lionel 1033 for pretty cheap...

I've used a similar power supply for a DC powered turntable.  Forward/Reverse, Clockwise/Counter-Clockwise.

Well, since you have the HO DC transformers in hand, why not try one - particularly the 899M which has a bit more power capability.  All the bump-and-go trolleys I've seen have an internal DC motor...and the lighted bumpers most likely have LEDs which are also DC devices.   A bird in the hand, etc..

For this application, a small, adequate, and functional old Lionel transformer can be had for $5 or so - just be sure the cord is good (and it's an easy fix if not).

Accessory side is AC voltage. 20 and 18 VAC

Look at the power, 6VA and 8VA, that's basically a six watt and an eight watt transformer!

So I have tried both of these with the new Lionel North Pole Central Trolley that I picked up this afternoon at Trainland.  The little route that we set up on the counter isn’t much more than 8 feet.  

The trolley certainly works, and runs, but there isn’t too much control over the speed.  There is a point in the travel of the lever where it goes from “0-60 mph” and then it takes off.

is that how these trolleys operate - pretty much off, or on, and nothing in between, or it is that a function of the little transformers’?

Oh, and the “bump” at the end of the line is pretty hard.  if there were  scale passengers inside they would probably get thrown from their seats.

That HO transformer is not going to give good speed control, the rheostat in there isn't the best and it wasn't designed to give good speed control to a larger motor (it didn't do good speed control on HO engines either, I had the Tyco one when I was a kid). You can probably pick up a decent transformer for relatively little that would meet your needs.

Thanks everyone I’ll be looking for something better suited.  Figured I would at least give these a shot. Bigkid I seem to also remember that these didn’t do too much for my HO trains in the 70s, either but I still had them in the basement.

Just to close this out - i picked up this Atlas transformer which is working well to run the trolley at a speed that isn’t crashing into the bumpers and moving track around the setup
