I have an MTH F-3 ABA. It works great when I operate two units as AA, but when I run it as ABA the front coupler in the trailing A unit makes a constant noise and shakes. Since it runs okay as an AA, I was thinking of taking the shell from the B unit and putting it on the trailing A unit so I would have the proto coupler. Yes, I know I can send it in for repair, but I do like the looks of an AB unit. Just curious if anyone has ever done this.

It would be simple to just add a coupler to the B-unit with a switch to select between it and the trailing A-unit. This would keep the compatibility with the A-B-A, since at some point you're likely to want it fixed. The wires run through the pass-thru tether in the B-Unit, this was recently discussed in the DCS forum I believe.

The shell from a B unit is not likely to fit on an A unit chassis. One has a rounded end and one has a square end.

Why not determine the actual problem and fix it?
