I am still using up my stock of original LCRU boards for conversions. My latest conversion is a steamer which runs well, but will not accept a new engine ID. Works fine using engine 1. I really would like not to swap the board because of all the connections required with the tether to the tender. The board has a single plug in processor chip which I could swap out with a chip from another board. Will that solve my problem? Is there any other component that might be blocking my reprogramming efforts?

Do you mean an R2LC? I've had a few bad ones and just exchanged it with a different one. Don't get in a rush when programming, hold the cab-1 buttons longer that you'd usually would,
I think that single plug in processor chip is for railsounds only.
Maybe check your pgm/run switch wiring. Could be a broken wire or bad switch.
If the LCRU won't accept the run/pgm switch, I'd first check to make sure the connections and switch are good. Next, just reseat the chip in the socket. Finally, check closely the traces and connector on the board. The fact that you can't change the TMCC address clearly seems to point to the switch not being sensed.
