Captain Kangaroo and Lionel Trains

Here is an off the wall TV show - anyone remember 'The Blue Angles' ran from 60-61?  Adventure series about the Navy's Flight Demo Team.

I remember the Blue Angels plus one other U.S. Navy related show telecast in the late 1950s called "Navy Log" which related different stories about the U.S.N.

Are there any links to any of CK programs with Lionel trains running?  I have yet to see one posted.

I believe his real name was John Zachary but I can't remember the name he used in the show.  His side kick was a beast you never saw named Igor.  The show, Shock Theater I believe it was called,  was telecast in the late 1950s circa 1957 to 1959 in the Philly area late at night after the 11:00 PM news.  He even made a 45RPM record entitled "Dinner with Drac" which was something of a hit in the Philly area and was even played on American Bandstand which aired in Philly during that time frame.

Not that it means anything to anyone other than a few Philly posters the name John Zachary used on Shock Theater was "Roland" pronounced ROW-LAND.  So much for nothin'.

My favorite from then was "Silent Service" about US submarines in WW2.

Victory at Sea had great orchestral music composed by Richard Rogers and Robert Russell Bennett. The sound track records were very successful in the fifties. The "Guadalcanal March" was a particularly rousing selection! I still have a CD of Volume I.

We need to change the title to this thread to OLD TV SHOWS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE TRAINS.

Pretty sure there were no trains on Victory at Sea! LOL!

Hi -- My dad was the CFO for Lionel back in the day and I am pretty sure that I am in possession of the Captain Kangaroo train set.  We are trying to authenticate it and also to start the restoration process.  Anyone that has photos or can point me to them would be appreciated.

Great walk down memory lane!

I remember CK, but nut the train episodes. My favorites were Thanksgiving Day: The Great Thanksgiving Day Parade, with portions from Macy's, Gimbel's, J.L. Hudson, later on a Canadian Parade, then later still one that seemed out of place, to me, from Hawaii.

The Kid's show in the Philly area were: CK, Connie Frances, Gene London, Pixanne, Romper Room in the morning. In the afternoon Happy the Clown, Bozo, Pete Boyel, Popeye Theater, Howdy Doody, then on channel 10 CBS The Five O'clock Movie (theme music: The Constipated Clock?)

On Sunday morning was Bertie the Bunyip with Lee Dexter, Sheri Lewis, evening Lassie. Saturday, my favorite Rin Tin Tin. 

That was probably the syncopated clock, not constipated clock.

I adored Captain Kangaroo! I watched it every day in the 1960's and I sure do remember Lionel trains appearing in the early 1960s' as well as appearances of H0 and N scale trains in later years. Does anyone remember Bob Keeshan's other show,Mister Mayor,that ran on Saturdays in 1964-65. I vividly remember the big Lionel layout on that show more than once ! It blew my 4 year old mind!!

Seeing Capt. Kangaroo's home address now has me imaging him walking the 3/4 mile to the LIRR Babylon station and taking the train into the city wearing his trademark jacket.

That show got me into scuba diving, after convincing my father I could pass the certification course, ultimately winding up as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. Have 2 bucket list dives left - Truk Lagoon, and Bikini Atoll.

Hello Marcia,

Welcome to OGR.    I do not have any information that would be of assistance to you.  But maybe the crowd here can.

Why not take a few photo's of the set you have and post them here.  Then the guys can identify what you have and then you can do a little digging and see if that particular type of set was used when the show was being aired.

Without some information - it will be very hard to assist you with your quest to learn more about the set you have.

My sisters and I would watch this show whenever we could.  It was a very entertaining show in its day. 

Does anyone have a link to a CK episode which shows the trains? 

Mr. Moose was always my favorite on the Capt. Kangaroo show.

Hello Marcia,

Maybe I can help.  I was a big fan of Captain Kangaroo and tried never to miss an episode when he had the trains on.  I used to make a list of the dealer display used and the trains that were on the display.  I may still have those notes with my dealer advanced catalogs.  Wish me luck.  I'm still trying to find some information for another forum member about a company called Right of Way (nothing to do with the Captain).

It’s nice to hear there are people on the forum that don’t know who Captain Kangaroo is. That means everyone one on here are not old Fa—— well you know what I mean. Like me. Anyway I never missed a show where the trains were on. It was my favorite morning tv show.
