I have a MTH EMD GP-7 Premier diesel engine (product #20-2335-1) in which the circuit board got fired.  I have replaced the circuit board with one from a MTH NYC GP-9 RailKing diesel engine (product #30-2316-1).  Both boards are PS 2 (5 volt) boards.

The MTH EMD GP-7 is now back to life and all functions are performing fine.

--> I am having difficulty in editing (changing) the name in the DCS Remote. <--

The remote lists the name of the engine as NYC GP-9.  I want it to say EMD GP-7 #100.

I perform the steps as outlined in Barry Broskowitz's The DCS O Gauge Companion on pages 38 and 39.

Menu --> System --> Engine Setup --> EDIT NAME

I select the active engine that I want to edit which is listed as NYC GP-9 in the DCS Remote.  I enter the new name (EMD GP-7 #100) and then scroll to the D on the bottom row far right and press the thumbwheel to save the change.

I immediately get the message 'CHECK TRACK' and then 'ENGINE ERROR' on the DCS Remote.

The name has not changed ... the engine still functions.

--> How can I get the DCS Remote and engine to recognize the name change? <--

For your information, I am using version 4.1 software in the TIU/Remote.

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Check Track means you have a signal strength issue.

Try hooking a short section of track to a Fixed output by itself.

Then you have a Programming track, and it will work fine.

Also, be sure the battery has a good charge before making the change.

Kill power (Not 'Shutdown Engine') and verify you get about 7 seconds or more of sound after power is off.

Hi Jeffery,

Upgrading to 4.20 may well help.  There was a software bug in 4.00 and 4.10 that effected the engine loading process.  I think you might be running into a side effect of that bug.  I never did test the "edit name" feature when researching the bug, but it does use some of the same code as the engine load.

The name you want to enter, "EMD GP-7 #100," can be entered just as you have tried to do.  However, any name entered with "edit name" feature is not permantent.  If you every perform a factory rest to the engine the name will go back to the original GP9's name.  If you can find someone with access to the DCS Dealer Loader software they can make the change permanent.  With the Dealer Loader you can use any character on a qwerty keyboard, including upper and lower case letters.

Thank you one and all for your assistance in renaming the EMD engine.

Dave Hikel had the winning reply ... once I upgraded my DCS from version 4.1 to 4.2 ... the engine name change was accepted.  The software bug he mentioned in his above post that was in versions 4.0 & 4.1 does affect engine name change.  Version 4.2 removes this software bug.

Again THANK YOU all very much ... and Thank You OGR for having this forum where individuals can and do assist each other by sharing information and helpful suggestions.
