As I am sitting here staring at my Shakespeare Express, and have just recently finished the Murder on the Orient Express PC game (featuring David Suchet as Poirot, just like in the TV series), the question has come up in my mind: are trains around the tree, or otherwise set up around Christmas, as popular in Britain or on the Continent as they are here in the US?

I'm not sure if you could say trains around the tree are "popular". Besides my own, I can only recall seeing 3 in private homes with trains under them.
I would wonder about Germany...since they "invented" the Christmas tree and Christmas "garden" or Putz.
I hope somebody from across the pond will chime in...I only remember a Christmas
shop, and not trains, in Rothenburg op der Tauber,and just one Spielzeug (toys) shop
that I SAW elsewhere, but I am sure there are more off the tourist routes. In London
I did visit one hobby shop but was not in private homes nor anywhere over there
during the holidays.
Not that common. However our tree has Lionel round it. We have been swapping between
running Thomas and the Polar Express.
Most people that see the trains round the tree appear to like the idea.
Our tree also has some Lionel ornaments and lights.

My Wife despairs that I have turned her once "Designer" Christmas tree into a Lionel shrine!
