Cleaning/Polishing Pewter

On another thread someone asked for suggestions on cleaning and polishing aluminum cars.

Well, how would you also clean pewter items? I have two comemerative pewter plates given to sharholders of the Reading RR and the Strasburg RR that I want to display but they honestly need sprucing up. Someone apparently tried cleaning them with something somewhat abrasive and they now have water spots, some scuffing and tiny scratches. Need suggestions on refurbishing pewter to like new appearance.

The best way that I know to clean pewter is to polish it vigorously with ketchup. (Use a cloth and/or a toothbrush.) For really stubborn stains, let the ketchup dry before you polish it off. There are several pewter cleaners available commercially which contain mild abrasives for dealing with slight scratches. You can also make up a paste of baking soda, some salt and water which also works well on slight scratches.
