I am new the conventional game for O-Gauge.  My other trains are all DCS.

I received a gift from a friend of a mid 90s Williams F3.  This train runs ok with the DCS variable channel.  However, slowing the train down is not a simple thing to do.  My thumb wheel is a bit on the fritz and does not always get the sampled as you turn it.  Thus stopping the train is a challenge.  It is interesting that for DCS trains the wheel works a lot better for setting speeds.  However, for the voltage setting it is poorly operating.

If I press the DIR control, the train comes to a screeching halt, which also includes gear grinding noises.  Is this how this is supposed to work?

Can anyone enlighten me on the finer aspects of controlling conventional with the DCS remote?

Thanks,

Bill

PS:  I have read the section in Barry's DCS book.  Also the horn button for the train does not work, but the bell button does.  The bell button plays a sound that is similar to wounded dog baying at the moon.  Poor dog.

You mentioned  your thumb-wheel is on the fritz. Why not get it fixed . Scrolling  the var channel's voltage  up and down  shouldn't be a problem unless the remote & tiu are not communicating very well. It looks to me like you may have a loose transceiver board in the remote..  Tether the remote & tiu with the curly phone cable.(land line) The one between the hand set and phone base. (not between phone base and wall outlet.)  Finding the curly cable is a little more difficult these days..

After posting   I realized it just could be a faulty thumb-wheel since you can dial in the speed.  Good luck.

The quick stop is a characteristic of conventional locos when power is cut.  It would be worse if you didn't have a flywheel (last owner may have remnoved it).  As Gregg says, replace the thumbwheel, so you cam slow it gradually.

To test the horn & bell buttons, start a DCS loco in conventional and try them.

While the Williams could be converted to DCS, it would not be worth the expense.
