I am in the beginning stages of building a O-gauge layout based on what was available in 1963. I have an old scenery book but it does not mention the road beds. When did cork begin to be used for road beds?
All I could find (googling) was that Midwest Models (makers of cork roadbed) was founded in 1952. But that was due to an interest in model airplanes, so I don't know when they got interested in model trains.
I also found a reference to a railroader who says he has used cork roadbed since the '50's.
With that little bit of info, I'd say it was around in '63.
I had to laugh when i read this, why you ask, because I started building my first serious model railroad in 1963, and I used cork for my road bed under the fiber tie flextrack that was available back then. I recall ordering it from Americas Hobby Center in New York. They ran ads in the Model Trains magazine. Old memory.
Thank you all for the information. I am trying to only use the materials and techniques that were available in 1963. When I built my pre-war layout based on the early 1930's I followed the same method.
