coupling lionel diesels together

Can the Lionel pw diesel's be coupled together by locking one in forward, and the other in reverse? Would the reversing units need to be tied together, for operation? I've been told both stories, so I thought I'd ask the experts. Thanks.

Yes I use to do that with GP7 and F3's
