Recently bought this Marx wedge tender to use with my Lionel 258. Reamed out a hole in the drawbar for the drawbar post on the engine, looked great.

Thought I was going to have to convert the coupler for use with my tinplate cars; the little slot proved to allow coupling to latch couplers.

Thought "that went well; why not try my other engines?"  So here is my 239. The drawbar gap is too wide for my tastes.

My 1666; it looked pretty good, but a little short for the engine.

The 685 decided it didn't want t be left out; the result was a little ridiculous, but somehow pleasant to the eye.

I think the Max tender looks fine behind the 258.  Paint the engine and tender the same black and they'll look like the were born together.

That's my plan.

The Marx tender looks a lot better than than the one that came with the 258.

I agree. Actually got the idea from AF, their O gauge steamers looked similar in profile to the 258, but with more trim, and had the AF version of Marxs wedge tender.

Update: 258 and the wedge tender have too small a drawbar space to round 027 curves. Look like it will be limited to the Hogwarts loop (042) until further notice.

Drawbars are pretty easy to replace or modify. I've cut multiple slots in some of my drawbars so they can be adjusted closer or further depending on curves.

I like to swap tenders around too, and sometimes get a better looking combination than the original setup. I thought the original diecast tender for my Marx 333 looked a bit small for the loco ...

A Lionel small streamlined tender looks pretty good except it's too wide ...

I kitbashed a long-haul tender from two plastic Marx tenders. The lengthened tender body fits conveniently on a Lionel 2452 gondola frame and rides on Lionel trucks. Drivers are small for a Pacific; I consider it a freight loco.
