I have a friend who has a cruise commander m that he is willing to give me. It was purchased for a diesel upgrade that he never did. Can I use that for a steam upgrade? I want to install it in a tmcc camelback engine 6-18091. This is a wired engine. No infared to tender. Were the cruise m specific for diesel/steam? Or just specific for wireless steamers?

Sure, it should work fine. The CC-M for all steamers did include a fix to enhance the serial communication as the wireless tether loads down the serial data and causes issues at times.
Note that you'll have to do a bit of surgery to fit it into the Camelback, the board mounts in an odd orientation and there isn't enough room for it. The sticking point is the different positions of the connectors and components on the board, apparently Lionel designed the Camelback to the exact form of the DCDR that is stock for that locomotive. I had to remove a connector from the motherboard and wire it around the new board to fit it in. However, once the hacking and whacking was done, it worked fine, I did two of the same model for the same guy.
Depending on how old it is it may or may not work. Early boards had code differences and some required the buffer John mentioned. Give it a try, but if it does not run with sound, you may need a buffer. G
Thanks for the tip John. I may be asking for more help when I get the board to install it.
The Camelback with the wired tether has a better change of working than some upgrades, even with an older board. OTOH, I know both George and I have experienced some oddities with the CC-M in some upgrades, even the current versions. I've always managed to get them to run, but a couple needed a transistor buffer for the serial data to solve issues with the serial data stream. This is the circuit I use, two resistors and the transistor. I steal the small amount of 5VDC power from the R2LC 5V supply.
