Trailing, NYSW 3018, appears to be a SD40-2. Giveaway is usually the large space between the ends of the hood and the end of the frame. Correct me if I'm wrong but the reason for the space was the SD40-2 and SD45-2 were built on the same frame.

Correct, i.e. "the same frame". As a cost saving, the Engineering Dept. developed "standard" underframe designs for all the SD models in the "Dash 2" line, and for the GP models. A customer wanting something special, i.e. longer than standard, had to pay extra.
Besides, the "Dash 2" SD underframe design was also different from previous SD models due to the new HT-C truck design, which also had a much larger diameter center bearing, which provided greater stability and increased tractive effort capability at slow speeds.
