I found I had an old Marx motor in my junk box.l I got for free while at a train show last year. Found it in a junk box while at the show seller wanted it gone and said take it. I salvaged it from the cheap plastic shell.  I'm thinking of building a shell over it. Perhaps a box cab shell or something else. I’m wondering has any else tried to build a custom locomotive or car over a old motor from perhaps your junk bins

Yes, but most are "modifications" or "kit bashes" more than total "scratch builds" due to my use of the original "body". I built one unusual "space" piece that makes me grin, but its almost more toy than train. I love to save "junk" with low $ stuff from here & there, build unusual/whimsical things, or turn an old item into something new. Tin plate? Scale? Plastic, wood, metal, or all of the above??... What kind of box cab build were you considering? Diesel? Electric? Steam?

My scratch builds are more often cars or static things but...

I used a diesel switcher power unit(Lionel) and made a box cab out of it with two caboose bodies, I have a nice Marx diesel switcher that will go that route one day and just this morning I was looking at a nice Lionel 2056 unit I bought cheap and was thinking of building a boiler & cab on it.  I have rebuilt and reused various pieces that don't have collector value. A lot of fun.  Did a lot of kitbashing with my G gauge stuff.

I have a steam dummy (a take off on "Hercules" at Mammoth Cave Nat. Park),built over a Marx #999 chassis (spoke driver version) that I think has appeared on here back somewhere in the archives.  I have been looking for a junk box Marx #1829 plastic Hudson, with broken plastic and uncollectible, to use the chassis for a 4-6-0 inspection engine, with partial coach built out over the smokebox, and another motor, probably a four driver one, to build a steam coach with the smoke box exposed on the front, per at least one shown at Shelburne.  Different is good.

I was thinking maybe a steeple cab style or something like the old Ives engines. Just a thought though
