I'm getting very close to starting the layout building process, but I have a quick question for you Atlas track users: is it better to cut special lengths rather than use small segments? In other words, if I have 9" to span, would a cut segment be better to work with than two 4.5" segments? I know each segment, big or small, counts in a block, so I'm thinking it would be better to cut. And if cutting, is this easy enough with a Dremel and any tips from those who have?

I pretty much use only Atlas flex track and I cut it a lot to custom form my plan. So my vote goes for cutting.
I use a dremel with a cut-off wheel. Goes through the track like butter.
Good question, Chad.n I'm somewhat behind you. I don't even have a design yet.
Trevize, do you use Atlas flex track for all of your curves too? I was thinking that might be more work but could result in smoother running. Tx.

If you are building a layout, you just as well get used to cutting. I use a chop saw. You also need a good new file with a handle on it to take off the burrs, and a hobby saw to cut the plastic strip on the bottom. Maybe the newer big dremmel would work, but the small disks are not my cup of tea.
I would cut the 9" pc rather than use 2 smaller pcs. As a rule, I go with the less track sections the better. One Dremel cut off wheel is all you'll need for a layout. They cut great.
Well there you go, unanimous, go with the cutting. That was the direction I was leaning towards too, but it's always nice to have it confirmed And thanks for the tip on the 6057 ties Mike. I'll post the layout plans for a final OGR scrutiny in the next couple of days. Thanks for responses!
