What should I do?
They are like tires, and need to be replaced eventually, unfortunately, much too frequently imo. I about spent the life of a new one programming in switch routes. You can get the part from MTH and its pretty easy to replace.
Isn't there a small plastic piece that often breaks that holds in the thumb wheel? I replaced something like this a few years ago. If I recall correctly, it was pretty easy.

There is an article in the Backshop section of OGR run 244(Aug/Sep 2010) page 87, that illustrates how to change a thumb wheel.

Go to above, there are some pictures posted that show the remote and it's innards and how to take it apart. From an old post. Not video though.
There are 3 or 4 different ones there to study. After removing the batteries and the screw, hold the bottom half in your one hand and squeeze until you can pop one of sides loose then you can use a flat bladed screwdriver to work your way around popping the sides free. The two halves just click together from bosses that protrude inside on the case.
Tomas,
Since you've been asking how to do this for a month now, it may be time for you visit the MTH web site and locate the MTH repair center(s) in your state(NY). I should think there would be several to choose from.
It probably would be best to have an experienced professional repair your remote.
There is a new thumb wheel assembly for sale on E-Bay right now, if you want to have a go at fixing it yourself.
There is another way to do this without ordering a new part. Takes about 20 minutes to fix your remote.
Depending on what the part is that is broken;
The thumbwheel has a tab that simply when you depress the thumbwheel pushes a button similar to all the other buttons on the remote. When the tab or plastic holding the thumbwheel in place breaks you can simply snap off the tab, glue the thumbwheel back into place on the lid.
Instead to activate the switch; drill a hole over where the tab used to be and find a hunk of plastic to fit in here to push and activate the button! Just to the left of the thumbwheel.
What I found worked was the Bic pens or something similar; if you are are a modeler you should own a bunch of these, I keep all the spent ones and find all sorts of uses for old pens.
The caps are great for running down dry transfer decals or all sorts of hobby stuff.
On the end you see that little blue tab at the end of the pen! Drill your hole so the inside part of that little blue piece slides easily but tight in the cover of your remote. The fat end wide part should be underneath inside the remote this is what pushes the button or rubber over the button that your thumbwheel tab used to push (before it broke off)!
There within a few minutes you have fixed your remote!! the hardest part will be getting the cover plate off the remote!
You can glue another one of these caps onto the top so you have something wide and soft to push on. Just cut a bit out of that plastic tube the ink is in this will fit inside each end of the plastic cap that you are using for the button pusher, a bit of contact cement to hold the 2 ends together make sure it is dry and moves easily before you reassemble the cover to the remote.
Simple and you do not have to wait or go through the hassle of ordering a new thumbwheel!
