I am curious what decoder( assuming NCE) and sound code you would put in a Carworks baby TM and a regular TM?
Thanks

BradA,
If you Google "Soundtraxx", you can go to the site and listen to an FM engine. They don't specify which engine it is.
Good luck,

If you want to avoid the piggybacked dual decoder installation you might consider waiting a bit and doing a PS3 installation. MTH has a PS3 FM sound set and you would get consistent speed control along with the motor control feedback integrated with the sound. If your locomotive has a can motor and flywheel I would strongly consider going that route.
What do you have for a DCC system?
I don't what sound decoder does FM sounds. I have heard that it is a unique sound.
However, for the motor, I would use an NCE D408SR. I use that for any loco that draws more than 1 amp running and 1.5-2.0 amps stall. It is very robust and has a bunch of functions. The stall rating is 10-12 amps I think.
If the Trainmaster has a Pittman motor as does my Carworks VO1000, the motor draws at least 2.5 amps stall - and maybe more. It will burn up a small decoder if you hit an open switch or some other stall condition that sends a momentary spike at the short.
The DCC concept of "stall" is not spinning wheels. It is stopping the motor and/or the wheels under full power and measuring what the current spikes to.
Jim,
Thanks---
I stumbled across the thread while searching for FM Trainmaster sound sets online.
The Soundtraxx Tsunami mentioned will work well for a 'baby' TM, 10 and 12 cylinders. But it is not the same sound used for the larger Trainmonster.
my search continues...
For O Scale's higher amps you may want to consider one of Norm's. I don't know if any are correct for your engine but I do know it eliminates the need for two decoders.

the Protocraft decoder uses the SoundTraxx sound set, which is the smaller FM motor. QSI has two FM sound sets, one of which they claim to be a Trainmonster. I'll have to call them to verify is this is true.
Chris,
What is the word from QSI?
http://www.qsisolutions.com/sounds/prime-movers.html
They list this as a trainmaster, I would like to hear from someone who actually heard the engine....
I just spoke to QSI and they are stating that their prime mover file listed as a Trainmaster is indeed from an actual Trainmaster---not a produced/re formatted file.
I will be ordering!
...that's make two of us.
PRR Man,
Please email me off line; I wish to discuss particulars on the decoders
my email is in my profile.
thx
