Plastic wheels pick up dirt. Metal wheels are more resistant to picking up dirt. That is why I use Intermountain wheel sets in Athearn trucks. It is an easy swap.

Ed's correct...plastic wheels are better replaced with a quality metal wheelsets such as Intermountain sells.

My experience is the same as Ed and Bob. I use metal wheelsets and no problems.
My experience is different my Weaver plastic wheels (Delrin) never get cleaned, heck nothing sticks to them not even paint. Now my plastic wheels on old Atlas Pola cars, they get dirty. I'm a 3 railer.

Scale City designs has the keil line defect detector. Lionel just came out with a more modern one.
