Hello all .....  Robert DeHanes displayed a SantaFe F unit and a set of extruded  shiny aluminum cars at the York  October 1986 meet ....no big deal you say ? Lionel did that  in the 50's   and everyone else has reproduced it ....yes but that is O gauge ....DeHanes built in Standard gauge .

The modern standard gauge  market for anything other then a direct reproduction of an older piece is a bit thin ...  so Dehanes rapidly found out to make any sort of return on his investment...or minimize losses  he would also have to offer his sets in  1 gauge.

Dehanes out shined the big boys when his gleaming F unit was chosen to grace the cover of Smithsonian magazine December 1988.   Dehanes  unfortunately suffered a fire at his "factory" in 1992 ...which halted all train production . In a recent article in the TCAQ ..it was reported less than 90 sets were made ...unknown if     that is only standard gauge ..or a combined total of standard and 1 gauge.

Here you have a video link to see engine #13     pulling a string of 30" DeHanes cars ...cars were offered in also the shorter 24" size ...F units offered in A & B ...could be had with one or two motors .

Unknown if they worked on any other train projects .     I have not yet seen the Smithsonian article ..just the cover .

The train is big and impressive but needs a big place to roam ... ... my cars have some ridiculous lettering ...which fortunately comes off with soaking in water ..originally they had Santa Fe lettering ... which was nice .

Here you have a set  ( not mine) ...note short and long cars ... original lettering

Cheers Carey

Dehanes Update

The DeHanes Classic Sante Fe Super Chief ‘Smithsonian Video’. https://youtu.be/BGpXP0LmU3w

The even rarer, one of a kind DeHanes Southern Pacific video: https://youtu.be/Tt4zn6g9lU4

I have been fortunate to observe this great visionary trainmaker’s  work and have been lucky to assemble a rare, uncatalogued collection of his works that include the Santa Fe, The Southern Pacific, Pennsy Broadway Limited, NYC’s 20th Century Limited, NJ Central  and an experimental pilot, never produced surprise that I’ll demo in this forum shortly.

Bob Dehanes had a great working partnership with John Harmon and John Kresse and collaborated on a  SP Daylight, Norfolk and Western J1, and the most spectacular 30 inch smooth side aluminum cars in Pennsy Broadway Limited and SP Daylight livery, all of which I was fortunate to acquire and will demo in this forum. What a Craftsman and an Artist!
