Yes, Lionel made 072 radii track in the 027 profile.  I, too, always liked the large radius Marx switches, also the fact they are a very low profile mechanism for clearance of longer length rolling stock.  Although I do not have any 027 track on my current layout, I have seen "Hi-Rail" layouts that did use 027 because of the low profile with 072 curves, and they look really nice, and use Gargraves or Ross switches.

No sorry. 072 was and still is considered the Main Line track this was only done in the higher profile rail. Fwiw,  if made in the lower profile rail that would have been confusing to many just starting in the Hobby.

Confusion has little to do with it.

O-27 was made in -27, -34, -42, -54, & -72 by various manufacturers.
O was made in -31, -36, -42, -54, -63, -72, -81, -96, & -120 by various manufacturers.

OK..... found the boxes of 027 track and the 072 I have is made by K line, my mistake on manufacturer.  The largest Lionel radii 027 I have is close, but must be 054, has only 3 ties and fits inside the 072 radius perfectly for use as an inner curve to the 072.  I didn't take a picture of the larger radius Marx switches, but they are smaller radii than the 054, perhaps 042?  Good topic.......

... A 72" curve section in one manufacturers track is not necessarily the same as another manufacturer.

For O-72, they were all pretty darn close to 35.88" radius.

The Marx wide radius switches are O-34.

HGL,

If you can get your hands on the old O Gauge K-Line 072 track it works very very well, use the old 711/072 Lionel Switches with it, or transition in and out of 072 FasTrack Command Control Switches, runs almost every different makers Trains perfectly, even Tin Plate.  Makes for a real nice running layout.

The 027 is nice but the O is nicer and you can run more trains on it.  O27 limits you a might.  Having loops of both is nice also.

I have two circles or O54 and O72 in personal storage waiting for a larger, future layout.  My new layout uses 54" on the outer mainline and 42" and 34" on the inner. I also used 54" and 42" also on the ceiling layout. All O27 lower profile track. Picked up 42" K-Line switches so I didn't have to use track power.  For those of us staying with tubular track, while availability can be a challenge, there are no longer any limitations relative to higher-profile O-Gauge.
