I don't have as much room on my layout to put a facility like you have there Alan, so using rolling stock the commodity (oil, sand, coal, diesel fuel) came in, with pumps and piping on a siding, may be all I can get to fit.

This may be of interest.  It is a picture of the BNSF sanding towers in Seattle, WA.  The Northwest passage is tricky and sand is an essential part of hill climbing.  My apologies for the poor quality.  It was taken from the top of an overpass.  No admittance to the yard.
