Thought I run them at the same time to compare and noticed the Lionel has to be set at 60 and the MTH at 22 to keep from running into each other.  Is lionel speed set different?  Obviously the lionel sound was better.  The MTH had a more mournful sound, and is good too.  The MTH has better conversation, but the smoking whistle on the Lionel is hard to beat.  I prefer the Lionel, but my son the MTH.  I wanted to get rid of the mth but hesitate sine he likes it.  I have the Lionel hauling 4 2 bay coal hoppers and a wood sided C & O caboose.  The loco is C & O but has the US on it.

I run both mth and Lionel articulated engines. I find the speed control is better with the mth and it is easier to keep on the track. The sound intensity is louder with the lionel but the cab chatter is better by far with the mth.  The railking articulated engines are fun in that they will run on 0-31.  You don't have any problems with it de-railing as you do the engines that required 0-72.  I also run some Right-of-Way articulated engine which also run on o-31 curves. These engines have run very well and smooth. They have their oun special running character.
