Did Lionel make some changes in the 2020 V1 cataloged ES44AC that resulted in their price being $50 less than the ES44AC in the 2019 V1 catalog?

Yes, they changed to the new legacy board, and few minor changes to the tooling. I would also make the assumption that they sell a lot of ES44s, and cost per unit generally goes down as the number of units produced increases. Plus they also have used this tooling for 10ish years. The more tooling they can reuse the better in terms of price for the consumer.
