Peter -

Seriously? That's one of the most annoying parts of having "O-Gaugeus Acquisitionitis".

Most (most!) of the rolling stock I own is still in the box. Not on purpose - but I still

pick up a piece here and there and here...now, mostly, as soon as I get it I take it out

and at least go put it on the layout (then throw the box away - there, I said it!). Then I

have to move it because there's no room...now where did I put that box?

Locos I always test, now, as soon as I get them. It's the "get them" that I don't do nearly as much, but "occasionally" still adds up. And I have one coming right now from daBay.

But it was a deal!

It's too crazy for comfort, in all honesty.

Thanks for bringing this up...yes I have one.

I took the last tour with OGR to Tony Lash's layout and got one of his cars.....he signed the car for us. It has never been run and probably will never be run. Tony was a super host and a very kind gentleman. I don't know what happened to his layout, but I thank God that I was so blessed to see it and have it inspire me with mine.

Maybe this will help?

A similar one was given to me by a close friend, that got it from his dear wife. Sorry, but at least it wasn't a picture of one of those daylight cab forwards...

The one car I have never run is in the center of this old photo of my 1980's layout, the C&NW Bi-level coach. I don't know the manufacturer, it was a kit. Wood floor, wood roof, metal ends, trucks and couplers, and plastic sides. I still have it, in pieces, but it has never rolled an inch in any train on any track.

The PE with the smoking whistle locomotive has never even seen its box opened. I have several add-on PE passenger cars, the Elvis anniversary car, the Theodore Roosevelt, Truman and maybe the Andrew Jackson (?) cars that also have never seen the outside of their boxes.  I have the MTH Premier Pacemaker freight cars that came with the Premier Mohawk and only one has been out of its box.  Finally, I have a Lionel Southern Express set from 1972 that has never been run.

Yes!  Hundreds of pieces.  No exaggeration, either.  I only have a little bitty 4' x 6' layout.  Meanwhile I've been stockpiling inventory for many, many years hoping I would have a place to run all of it some day.

I will finally have a brand new 18' x 24' train room later this year.  I can't wait to finally let all of this stuff see the light of day!  My intention is to run all of it...I definitely don't want to be a "collector" any longer!

Still have loads of freight rolling stock on the shelf from 30+ years of collecting/buying but all 33 engines have either been run or tested.  About 13 years ago I became an operator and came to realize that we had more trains than could possibly be run. Plans call for many cars to be placed on secondary trains on the passing sidings and on the factory sidings.  Should be able to display and run 40-50 cars on the layout and that should be satisfying. The P/W stuff will mostly fill shelves as collectible pieces. New buying is on semi-permanent hold, as there is always something interesting that seems to comes my way. If you stop completely the fun goes away. I tell you, its a sickness.

I'm still awaiting a permanent layout which should happen when we purchase a new home (soon I hope).  Currently I only set up a Christmas layout in December.  Because of this, several of my high end engines have not been run and are still sitting in their shipping boxes.  This includes:

Vision Line Big Boy

Vision Line NS Gen-set Switcher

Legacy Polar Express (this will be run next year but didn't get it in time to run this year).

Many, many... Lots of Atlas billboard reefers, most of my ETS tinplate, and several Standard Gauge items that I can't run until I get around to restoring or rebuilding them. There are also some locomotives and rolling stock that I bought with the intention of repainting or modifying them.

My layout is small (13x13), and still very much under construction, so I spend more of my "train time" building than operating. I do run big engines and long trains at our toy train museum, but that's every couple of weeks at most. So, a lot of my collection gets run once a year, or not at all.

I have run everything at least a little bit.

The one car that took me years to break and run was the original lifesavers tank car.  I have run it few times in limited service until this past weekend.  I took it and several other tank cars to a public display at the local library.  I thought it would get a fair amount of attention but boy was wrong!  You simply can't compete with two polar express trains and Thomas.  With that competition my prized chrome plated tank cars just faded into obscurity

My only "sins" are the 2353 Santa Fe's that I bought at a local train store. They had been run, but not much. The B unit is immaculate.

So far I have yet to run the CN Coal train set I bought at Oct 2010 York.

Yeah trains are for running.........I will probably NEVER run the 2353's (they are the scarce year) but the coal train will see some track time next year. At Christmas time loaded with candy.

I want to consider myself as a operator but the sad thing is that I have not had a layout in my home since 96. My problem has been is that I have been buying for my future layout that has not developed yet. I have way more trains that have never seen tracks then I could ever imagine.

So in the past few days I have finally decided that soon I will be downsizing collection.

Funny, I was under the layout and "found" a bulkhead flat and depressed center flat that I had forgotten about.  Nice new boxes.

I like the looks of my Alaska freight now, so I suppose they'll get some run time I get some loads for them. It's already too long for my siding. Somebody will have to get parked. The demurrage will kill me.
