The item in the green square. This is on an early Geep. On the short hood. They are on both sides, sometimes 2 per side sometimes only a single. During rebuilds or shopping some appear to loose them.

That is the latch retaining bracket, which retains/holds the cover over the batteries. When servicing the batteries, the cover is un-latched, opened upwards, and one of the latch handles is fitted into that small bracket, thus holding the cover open (and NOT falling down on a worker) during maintenance or replacement of the battery.
