I have a nice 30" X 84" door that came out during a recent renovation on the house. I've been toying with building a switching layout on it and present this plan for comment, critique, modification, hearty approval, etc.....

I don't know if I will build it anytime soon but I am keeping the door so....

The plan is all Fastrack with 036 turnouts and 072 Wye's. I started with a basic Inglenook plan and modified it with a run around and a couple extra sidings. The design was done in SCARM and tested with the SCARM simulator. Looks like everything works and I was able to move 4 cars around with a single switcher without getting stuck anywhere. I may need to add a couple of short extensions to the "main" running diagonally across the board for some wiggle room. Getting the run around to work took some time in SCARM since you can't make custom lengths. Once the Wye's fell into place the rest was easy. If anyone can explain why Lionel doesn't make FT in short lengths in 1/2" increments, I'm all ears.

Base on the door will be 2 sheets of 1" pink foamboard to allow for some changes in the grade elevations.

Not sure what industries I would use yet but some kind of warehouse on the lower left sidings will probably be the starting point. Everything would be modular for easy removal so the door can store flat against my garage ceiling.

Here's a copy of the plan and a series of screenshots from the simulator.

I like it. After seeing something similar in a recent issue of the OGRR magazine I thought something like that would be a fun project. My train space at home is limited to my small office and I have no expansion room left. A door sized layout is simple and easy to store when not in use. One of the things that was done in the article layout was to build up the mounting surface to submerge the track for added realism.
