There are a couple rules, You can change any 5 volt sound  file with another 5 volt sound file, there may be the odd exception... trolly etc

Any 3 volt file can be changed with another 3 volt file , again a few exceptions,

early upgrade kits  only had  a certain amount of memory  which was fine for most early engines, however the memory  on some engines has almost doubled so you really can't put a large sound file into the smaller memory type board. Other than that ,( unless things have changed) if you have a  newer upgrade kit with lots of memory  you can install any 3 volt file whether it's a upgrade sound file or an production sound file.

The dcs loader will let you know if the file is not compatible with the board. Go for it.

Bob, Best way to see options for Sound files is to go to the "Service" Link on the left side of the MTH page.  Then click "Files and Documents", then type in the engine type in the search box (Example F-3 or 2-8-0).  You will get a complete list with documents available showing.  Including sound files.  You can refine your search using the options on the left of the page, such as Premier or Rail King, even select a road name.

This is the best way to get documents to show.

As Gregg mentioned, 3V to 3V and as long as you have a 2M board you can probably load any sound file.  The exceptions are those files that require factory flashing for special features (Trolley, artriculated steam, quillable whistle, GG-1 operating pantagraphs).  G

Thanks guys!

I was running my upgrade 2-8-0 last night and thought I noticed the chuffs were quite synchronized with the revolution of the drivers.  Could I have downloaded a file intended for a 2-8-0 with smaller drivers?  How do I identify engines with same size drivers as what my engine has, or better yet, how do I identify a file specifically for an engine with those size drivers?  Trial and error or is there a better way?

The file I downloaded was for engine 20-3143-1 .  One thing I noticed was there's no generator "spooling up" sound.  I just took another look at that engine and can't see a generator so maybe that's why (and pretty cool for MTH to notice and tailor the sounds to each engine).  The original engine came from a Locosound RTR set 30-4088-0 I think.

From the photo of the 20-3143-1 I think the drivers are smaller than what's on my engine.

Don't forget you can change the chuff rate with the existing sound file under the (i think) sound menu from 1 chuff to 16 .  One other thing I forget to mention is--- Each engine has it own algorithm to create  scale miles per hour so that all mth engines run at the same speed. A file from one engine to a different engine might have different charcteristics so the algorithm might not work out and  the engine will not run  at the smph mth created. It really doesn't matter unless you're going to double head different steamers ,then you're in trouble  (one fighting the other) GTG.

Gregg,

Just did that.  I had selected 4 chuffs, but it sounded out of sync.  I changed it to 3 chuffs and it seems better.  I'll keep tinkering with it, but one of the modifications I made to this engine was adding a steam generator and the file I chose apparently doesn't have the sound for it.  I'm thinking one of these would be better:

Bob, Your engine is a RK 2-8-0.  The file is from a Premier 2-8-0 H3.  So definitely different.  This really is a trial and error process to get what you want.

Your best initial bet is doing the search as I suggested and do 2-8-0.  Refine by Rail King and look at the models, then do a Premier and see what options are.  Browse the files and the engine characteristics.

I look at the engine pictures, description of features, and size of sound file to help with selection.  In the end you have to load it and operate it to see if you like it.

If you got the kit from DHS, they were the newer kits and I assume have the 2M board.  So you really can load what ever you want as long as it is a 3V file.  G

Gregg,

When I added the engine (back) it did come up in the same spot (my 4th engine) but with the same name I gave it previously.  The name must reside in the remote in that position (4) regardless of the next engine assigned to it, until I go in and change the name.

I've found yet another file I want to try, but not tonight.  I'm tired of lugging all the necessary stuff down to the computer to do the download , give it another try tomorrow.

This is an old post, but I want to thank you for it. It helped me find a file I wanted
