I've recently had an occasion to use DCS 2.3 newly installed on my PC. I had to load a soundfile onto a Loco with a new board installed. While doing so I noted that there seemingly was no provision in the new loader program to allow downloading of a soundfile from an engine. I am often asked to modify soundfiles and before starting I would always download the current file before installing a different one just in case the owner wanted the loco reverted back. Am I correct in my observations or just missing the function in the program.

Charly,

Unfortunately, you are correct.
MTH removed the function to transfer an engine's sound file to the PC in both the Consumer and Service versions of this most recent release of the Loader Program.
However, MTH has stated that they will return this function in the next release of the Loader Program, which is not yet scheduled.
Thanks Barry, for the clarification. I do have two computers available to program with and one is an oldy moldy Gateway running 98 and I can save files from engines with it. So all is not lost. I just thought it odd that they removed that function and I am glad to hear they plan on returning it with the next version.
I thought that the reason MTH removed that feature was because it was faster to download the original sound file from the MTH website if needed rather than transfer the file from the engine. Is there a benefit to transfering the original sound file from the engine to the computer? Thanks, Joe

Yes, that's correct.

Yes, there are three that come to mind.
First, some early PS2 engines may not have their sound files posted at all.
Second, the original sound file for an engine is not always available on the web. If MTH upgrades an engine's sound file and places it on the engine's web page, the original file is no longer available.
Third, if Internet access isn't readily available when one wants to save a copy prior to placing a different sound file in an engine, the only available copy for backup purposes is the copy in the engine.
C, I have the Service loader and a copy of 2.2 Consumer on the same computer. So you can use 2.2 to get the file and 2.3 to load it on the same computer. 2.2 is still available on the MTH website. G

Cool... thanks for the heads up GGG. I just reformatted the laptop and did not think you could have 2.2 and 2.3 running together. Good to know

I just went to the MTH website and could not locate v2.20 of the Consumer Loader program. Would you mind posting a link to the location where you found it?
Thanks,
Chuck
Charly,
Check your E-mail...
Chuck,
I'd send you a copy, however, your profile lacks an E-mail address.
C, I have not run them at the same time, but they are both on the same computer. I think I had to look thru old DCS news to fine the article and a link to the program. G

I have both open all the time on my train rom PC with no ill effects. I've been doing this for the past several months, ever since 2.3 was released. I routinely one while the other is also open.
Barry, May I also have the link to DCS Loader 2.2.
Thank You, Bob Wheeler
Robert,
There is no "link". I E-mailed it to you.
Barry,
Thanks for agreeing to e-mail v2.2 of the Consumer Loader to me. I'm still "thinking" about DCS, TMCC and Legacy, but having some "older," but still useful, software is just one way to be prepared for potential future emergencies. Please use prr1950-trains@yahoo.com as the address, whenever it's convenient for you.
Thanks again,
Chuck
Chuck,
It's been sent.
