Dual Can Motor Traditional Size Diesels?

1. The original RailKing f3 locos were really short. When MTH reproduced the Lionel postwar F3 in the RailKing line, the shorty F3 was renamed "rugged rails". So searching for rugged rails F3 will get you a nicely condensed F3 loco for your railroad. There are some B units on eBay right now, but no A units that I could see.

2. Also, Williams produced ALCo FA locos that were copies of the O-27 postwar Lionel ALCo FA units that are quite undersized. You have to be careful looking for this one because some were produced with only one motor. Williams made the ALCo FA in both scale size and O-27/postwar size, so be aware of that also. The small one is called the FA-2 in Williams parlance. There are several FA-2 locos on eBay right now.

Either the Williams FA-2 or the MTH rugged rails F3 should do what you want on your railroad.

3. A third choice is the RED Chuggington loco (the blue one is bigger). It is a caricature of an F3. Some of the major train companies have them on sale for around $90 or so.

Some of our sponsors/ vendors should have these locos.

How about the early K-Line MP-15 (12.5) & S-2(10.5).  The motors were in the trucks.  Probably not the best place to put them but they did the job they were designed for.

Look around for some of the RMT stuff, they had a number of things with dual motors and less than 12" in length.  The BANG and BEEP come to mind right off...

Currently available Williams RS-3 engines operate in conventional and have sound. They are nicely detailed for the price.  TrainWorld has 3 road names priced at $159.99 to 199.99. These units have dual can motors with a quality drive system. I have purchased three of these and converted them to DCS.

The Beeps are 9" overall and the Bangs are 10.5" overall. My Rail King F3's are 14.5" and my K-Line MP15 is 12.5".

Only other suggestion is the NW-2s produced by Williams and WBB. I've got two, both dual can motored.

As Bill DeBrooke said earlier, the K-Line S-2 meets your requirements. Overall length is 10.5”, dual motors, and conventional running. Here’s a photo of mine.

Several forum members have rewired the motors from parallel to series to give better slow speed performance.

Another option might be a couple of Lionel post-war diesels. Each only has a single motor but together they have two!  😁  

Add a B unit for the look of a powerful lash-up that will still negotiate small radius turns.

Mannyrock -- perhaps you should start using Google for answers for some of your basic questions, ie. RMT Beep, etc. Just a suggestion. You can always follow up here if you need more detailed information.

Those are the copies of the Lionel post war F3. The Rugged Rails versions are shorter.

Weighing in at 11.5 " long comes the MTH F-3 fighting under the handle,

"The Texas Special."

Or, if you would like an ABA it appears to be about half as long as a Premier E8 AA.  That picture is from my MTH prototype collection.
