Well I've made lodging reservations and Faxed my TCA membership application to Leslie.  Just waiting for my probationary number so I can register on line for York.  My concern now is how doable is York using an electric scooter.  This is very important to me since I'm unable to walk any long distance for various reasons.  I'd really like to hear from anybody who has used a scooter.  Thanks for any replies.

We don't use scooters but our youngest son was in a stroller until very recently.  While strollers are banned in the halls, if you have had a kid in a stroller you learn to view public spaces from the perspective of whether they can accomodate a stroller, space-wise.  My view is that the halls all handle scooters without a problem, particularly the orange hall.  Also, there are no shortage of folks there with them, as the TCA crowd is aging (unfortunately).  So my view it is do-able.

As a fellow Marylander I'll tell you that if you make it to York and want access to something that you cannot seem to handle in the scooter, drop me a line and l can check it out for you.  I have two sons who have endless energy for finding trains.  I can leave you my cell or we can work something out.  I am typically at the show on Friday.

I don't think this is even an issue now, since there haven't been any layouts in Black Hall for the past several meets.  Anyway, I thought that they added a ramp in the back (going from memory here).

Yes, call ahead to reserve a powered wheelchair or scooter.  They will ask for height and weight of whoever needs it, as they have different sizes they try to match with customers.  The cost as of this past April's Meet was $45 for Thursday, $50 for Friday and $45 for Saturday ($140 total for the three days).  They do not take credit cards over the phone.  They ask to send payment by check to reserve the chair or scooter.  Or you can take a chance and try to get one when you arrive at the Fairgrounds.

After you call to reserve you can send a confirmation letter along with the check.  They haven't ever replied with a confirmation but we never had a problem when reserving a chair.  They are very nice people.

The mailing address to send payment after you call to reserve is:

My first York was April 2012 and I attended with my father, who is a wheelchair-bound paraplegic so perhaps his experience is comparable to using a scooter. He did have quite a few issues moving around people in the tighter more crowded member halls so be prepared for that. But the larger dealer halls were a breeze, lots of room. He was also able to get into the Black hall fine since they did have a ramp for that show at least.

I strongly advise against that Nick. I only meant that in the member halls a "traffic jam" in the aisles was a frequent occurrence and as such my father did have to do a bit of maneuvering around people or staying still while a jam freed up around him. We still had a great time

People in scooters navigate just fine in member halls, but the going can be a little slow.  Most traffic jams in the aisles have nothing to do with scooters.  There is just so much wonderful stuff to see in those halls that slow moving traffic is inevitable.

Nick, will you be attending the OGR gathering at the TGI Fridays on Thursday night?  It is the best place to meet fellow forumites.

I believe that you'll be alright with renting a scooter Nick. I've been renting a scooter for the past two years before and after my back surgery. You'll have no trouble navigating the Orange and Purple Halls. The Blue/Silver Hall is manageable but can be tight so you need to be patient with people walking about.

All I know is that without the scooter I would not be able to see or do very much as I would be limited to basically the Orange Hall. The people at D&R are nice to work with and I'm sure that you'll enjoy your visit to York and be more refreshed by having access to the scooter.

Patience is the key but the halls are manageable.

Andy, Thursday @ Friday's is one of the main reasons for my attending York as I've met very few forum members.

There is a federal law in place nationally requiring public buildings to have access to the handicapped. I believe it is the ADA or American Disability Act, which has been in place since the 1990's.

If you are going to be needing a wheelchair on an ongoing basis Jim you might want to look into a lightweight portable folding wheelchair Jim. They are lighter and easier to use than a standard wheelchair. There are some weight considerations as they are not as sturdy as a standard wheelchair but they are lighter and easier to fold and place in your car.

I can understand that there are many of us who are aging, and have developed a true need for the scooters. They are a necessity. HOWEVER, those of you using the scooters expect those of us walking to make room for you, I would remind you that they a scooters, not snow plows. Please, there is no need to run up on our heels, plowing through us! We might not be aware of you trying to get by as we are shopping. A simple excuse me will generally open an aisle for you. There was one fella last year who seemed to be trying tot mow folks down just for the heck of it!
