I’m looking at a Post War #2026 loco that came in a box of odds and ends. It runs nicely although it has no reverser, and the pilot truck is missing.

I have an #8620 4-4-2 which is being cannibalised for various purposes. It has an electronic reverser with four wires; red and black, blue and white, in pairs.

Is this suitable for use on the #2026?

The 2026 uses a 3 position e-unit (226E-35). I'm unable to fine a Lionel 8620 that matches your description. Some of Lionel's electronic e-units can be used as replacements for the mechanical ones, but we have to know which electronic board you have first.

If you want to learn more about these e-units, wiring them, and servicing them, a good start are these Lionel Service Documents that Olsen's and Lionel kindly hosts:

May be easier to put a mechanical E-unit back into it. Even if you've got to refurbish one. I've fixed my share of junker E-units and brought 'em back to life. Not too hard........

Not too hard if you have 2 1/2 hands.  It helps to have a retainer ring spreader for the extra 1/2 hand.
