is this within normal limits at speed step one? Smooths down at 5-6. Gears dry? Motor loose? I guess I can turn up the sound for the squeak!

Whos model is it? there are 5 different manufacturers that made a GS4 and some of them made multiple versions or runs
Is your 4436 a Lionel product? (I see a ZW and Legacy system.)
Sorry, Lionel 6-11127 GS4 SP Daylight. TW
Squeak? Uh - oil it, for starters. Valve gear/rods especially - these are typically the squeakers. Grease the gears (turn it over - some screws should say "GREASE"). Do all that and put some mileage on it, then worry about loose motors.
Lubrication. Always start simple. And common-sensible. Turning up the volume is not maintenance.
D500, I did oil when I first got it in 3/17. Removing screws for grease revealed grease at top, so I went no further. Should I stick a toothpick or something else to check grease level? How do I know grease is sufficient? I will re-oil everything to be sure that part is ok. It does have a couple hours run time by me but I don't know about previous owner.

C'mon D, you know I was just teasing. Got it oiled and threw some grease in the ports, so will "put some mileage on it" now. Thx for all the suggestions. Anything else you think of let me know. TW
I hear what sounds like a rubbing sound, that's not normal with no sound enabled.
Sounds to me like a motor bearing. The bird like sound is coming from something moving faster than the running gear. Just a guess.
Add grease to the universal shaft between the motor and gear box
Took advice from all. Quiet and smmoot, Ole. Thanks everybody.

Credit where credit is due. GRJ's "rubbing" comment caused me to open the shell. That's where I found the U joint/shaft. A dot of grease at the four pin locations on the u joint, and the shaft on the gearbox side(per JDaddy) and the step 1 running was smooth and quiet. Thx again Ted
