All,

I just installed an ERR AC Commander and I need info about the functionality of the cab light when feature code 6 is set.

My question is: Is the cab light supposed to turn off when the loco is switched to the reverse direction? The ERR installation manual calls out feature code 6 as a cab/marker lighting control. As it functions currently, it is appropriate for marker lights  (on/off with change in direction). Why use it as a cab light when it turns off in reverse? The output is already controlled by Aux 8 & 9. I figure if the operator wants it on, they should have the option to keep it on and not turn off when reversing direction. Or, when used in a GG1, the cab light should stay illuminated in either direction unless toggled off with the Aux buttons.

This AC Commander was installed in a PW F3 and I was planning on adding a 4 wire tether between the two A units which will allow directional headlights, couplers, and cab lights. Well, I don’t think I’m going to use it this way now because the cab light won’t stay lit in the trailing A unit if I switch directions. Is there a different feature code that will keep the cab light output on unless Aux 8 & 9 are used? Is it possible to use the feature code for a smoke unit but wire the output for the cab light? Any ideas?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Dan

I'm an ERR newbie and will be following along. I'm planning to upgrade an AA set of F3's as well. I think the smoke or electro-coupler outputs can be used to operate the lights, not sure if it would work automatically. I guess a small auxiliary relay would do it.

Gunrunner John did a good post on converting a BEEP which may help you out.

The cab light control is the smoke control from the TMCC/Legacy remote, that turns it on and off.  When you reverse directions, the polarity of the cab light output changes, that allows for directional marker lights using bi-polar red/green LED's.

GRJ,

Just to be clear, using the exact same LED board I made for the leading A unit's cab light, just flip the + & - of the trailing A unit's cab light at the connection to the smoke/lighting output and they should alternate when the loco's direction is toggled? Sounds easy enough. Thanks again guys!
