I know people involved in this hobby who don't even have a layout in their home to be bored with.  They belong to train clubs and just bring their trains to run them on the club's layout that is constantly being modified by other members at their own pace.  Others get involved with small modules that fit together in a scheme at events.  They may only have to change a module or two to keep their interest alive from time to time.

Clubs are nice but can get too political and nit picky. for someone getting to the hobby this can be a turn off. i belonged to one yeaRS ago and it was very interesting at times.
