Finished the D-190 Display Layout (Updated 7/12/2012)

Started wiring the layout.  Used #14 AWG wire stripped from romex instead of the copper strapping Lionel used in order to save some $$$.  All other wire is #16 AWG.

Beautiful!  There's nothing like a classic Lionel display layout. Good stuff.

It's finished, as close as I can get without going financially crazy.  Extra cost for items not in my stock was about $100.00 for wood, paint, some track, casters, etc.  The train set poised on the overpass is my original Christmas set form 1957, which is appropiate since the D-190 was firs offered in 1957.  Original items ont layout from my childhood are the #356 freight station, #155 ringing highway signal, #252 crossing gate, and the ZW transformer.  I plan on adding more accessories to fill in the empty spots.  Next, on to the 1957 catalog layout.

Joe,  What size is this layout? 5x9? 4x8? If 5x9, is it a single sheet of plywood, and where did you find it?

It's 4x8 and the track plan fits the table with some room to spare on the edges.  I had to play with the geometry a little bit to get it to fit.  It required a custom cut straight track piece located between the two switches that feed the  yard.  It is 3 1/2 in. long.  The published plans show a standard 1/2 straight but the it doesn';t work using that size track section.

The layout looked kind of plain as built per Lionel's specifications so I decided to spruce it up with additional accesoories and detail parts.  Note the 1957 catalog boxcar, milk car platform, Lionel building kits, yard signs, hobo campfire, operating signals, and other Lionel manufactured items.

Just saw this.   Excellent.  I'm a "toy train style layout" enthusiast.   I have Roger's book and have been thinking about doing a D-190, among others.   Perfect size for my crash pad. 

Love the idea of the folding legs.

Chris - Regarding 5 X 9 plywood:  If you're interested, other members of this forum have stated that 5 X 9 "ping-pong table plywood" (a better grade) is available at real lumber yards (if you can find one in your area.)

One thing Roger Carps book does not tell you is that the track between the two bottom switches has to be 3 1/2 in.  not a half straight as shown in the diagram.  The track geometry will not work with the half straight.

Great job on the layout, nicely documented with photos! I've drawn the plan with AnyRail (free version) but couldn't fit all the pieces exactly the same as in the photos.

The track section between the two switches in the middle of your track plan has to be 3 1/2 in. long for the geometry to work.  The Lionel drawing shows a 1/2 straight which will not work. It took me a while to figure that out.

That is how I remember all the Christmas layouts I visited.

One of my favorite layouts of all time! I'm thinking of doing this layout but stretching it out to 12'. I was also thinking of adding another foot to the width so I could run a loop of 0-42 around the outside of the layout for some bigger locomotives.
