I'm finally got around to start building the 1957 catalog layout when I realized that I had enough accessories and whatever to build the D-190 display layout also (originally offered for sale in 1957).  First will be built is the D-190.  Fortunately, there is enough on-line photos of the layout plus a track plan and description in Roger Carp's book.  !957 is the year I received and still have my first Lionel set.

Here is a photo of the preliminary track layout mock up done to confirm the track plan in the book.  BTW, it matches perfectly.  The grades were not installed.  I'll will update this thread as progress is made.

4/24/2012 - Added accessories and trestles to mockup.

5/7/2012- Table top finished and mounted to folding table legs

Roadway and roadbed painted, grass paper glued down, Yes I know about

it's  shortcomings but I wanted that 1950's look. And it is faster to do.

Perimeter fasia baords added. Painted a Lionel green like the original displays.

5/9/2012 - Trestles and trackwork attached, accessories placed in position for final

wiring  connections.  Next is to construct the control panel.  And yes, that is an  original Milwaukee Road F3.

6/5/2012-  Completed, scroll down for final pictures.  The table legs sit on two wheeled dollies made from dissected  small moving dolly purchased at Tractor Supply.

It's finished, as close as I can get without going financially crazy.  Extra cost for items not in my stock was about $100.00 for wood, paint, some track, casters, etc.  The train set poised on the overpass is my original Christmas set form 1957, which is appropiate since the D-190 was firs offered in 1957.  Original items ont layout from my childhood are the #356 freight station, #155 ringing highway signal, #252 crossing gate, and the ZW transformer.  I plan on adding more accessories to fill in the empty spots.  Next, on to the 1957 catalog layout.

Chris:

It's 4x8 and the track plan fits the table with some room to spare on the edges.  I had to play with the geometry a little bit to get it to fit.  It required a custom cut straight track piece located between the two switches that feed the  yard.  It is 3 1/2 in. long.  The published plans show a standard 1/2 straight but the it doesn';t work using that size track section.
