Progress on the layout has been moving along pretty well. I’ve finished the benchwork and run and all the drop wires from various points around the layout to a series of terminal blocks near the eventual location of the control panel (currently have three terminal blocks, one for each of the main lines, will eventually have a fourth when I add the center yard area). The attached photo will give some idea of my progress.

Layout 10-08-15

As I am about to start connecting the wires to the tracks, I have a few questions which I hope know you all can help me with!!!

  • I have always run my trains on a single loop on the floor and that made hooking up the Legacy Command Base to the track fairly simple (I am using FastTrack). I will be running the hot and ground wires from each track’s terminal block to separate terminals on several ZW transformers. I know you only need one Command Base for the entire layout, but I don’t know the best way to connect each of the main line tracks to the command base. Any guidance you can give me would be appreciated.
  • I have several Command Control switches on the layout. The box states that no wires are needed in Command Control. I assume that this means that I can just disconnect the throw switch controllers before I screw down the track, but the instructions which came with the switch seem to be silent on this matter. Am I correct in assuming that I can just disconnect the controllers?
  • Finally, I also have a few non-Command Control wyes. Due to their location, I may need to extend the controller wires back to my control panel. The wires look REALLY thin. Can anyone suggest what type of wire I should use to extend the wires (I may opt to use an ASC controller – haven’t decided yet)

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Well, things have been coming along nicely. The benchwork is assembled except for one section which I've left out for ease of access to the interior of the layout. I hope to be finished with laying the 1/2 in. plywood in the next day or so and then move on to adding the homasote, which leads to my question: what is the best way to secure the homasote to the plywood? I've read on the Forum that you shouldn't allow screws to go through the track to the plywood, but can I screw the homasote to the plywood (and later, the fastrack to the homasote only)?

And I'd like to really thank Moonman for his advice on running the major wires before adding the plywood. My aging back and two arthritic knees owe you big time!!! The Mianne benchwork I purchased is 40" which allowed me to run a few hundred feet of wire with no bending/crawling.

Thanks.

Looks great. Nice looking layout and good size too. I am a big fan of the Mianne bench work. Great stuff. Looks like you will have a very nice layout when finished. Do you have a track plan thread or pictures posted somewhere? I didn't use Homasote, it is hard to get around here and pretty very expensive, so I will leave that to others more experienced with it. I do know it is good for a base for holding track screws and trees and other things like that in addition to reducing noise.

I also have some physical problems that severely limit getting under my layout. If you have any further work to do under the layout (I am sure you will), get one of these Mechanic's Stools from Harbor Freight. It you are not too tall it works great. I get around pretty well on this thing under the Mianne, for about 10-15 minutes at a time. Gotta come out and straighten up for a while after that before going back in. Just remember to duck a little when approaching the cross braces.

Good luck and please keep us posted with lots of pictures.

You can either screw or glue it.  If you will ever want to take the layout apart or rearrange the tables Screwing is the only option.  I would use flat head screws so they will be flush to the surface.  The will countersink/recess themselves.  I'd place them about 1 foot apart around the edge and along any cross members.

Rtr12;

thanks for for the info. I luckily have been using my "crappy basement" for storage and I had an old desk chair which lowers to around 15 inches, almost as good as your recommendation, so I will be using it as soon as I remove the back.

Luckily, the Home Depot near me carries homasote. It was a bit pricey, but I've heard a number of recomendations on it's sound reduction quality that I thought it was worth the extra cost.

and I must agree on the Mianne benchwork. I was able to assemble the 14' x 16' layout with a 48' wide island in the middle all by myself. It is very well designed.

Thanks Jan. While I suspect this will be a real permanent layout, you never know. I'll get some flat head screws to secure the homasote.

Thanks.

Thanks Spence, but in comparison to your efforts, mine don't compare!!! And, while I look forward to seeing your new layout, I sincerly hope that I will NEVER see a need for O120 curves. I am a sucker for big steam and if they start making anything bigger than the Lionel BigBoy, I will be in serious trouble.

Thanks again.
