Fixing Pilots on Lionel Diesels

While I love the look of 2-rail, I also love to run my 3-rail trains from Lionel. So my question is, how hard is it to fix diesel pilots on Lionel locomotives? That's the only thing in 3-rail that bothers me, not the oversized couplers or 3-rail track, it's those pesky swinging pilots.

It can be done, but it's quite a bit of work. Well worth the effort though IMO.

Another question, what about wheels? Scale wheels or Hi-Rail wheels? I'm leaning towards the latter but I see some people who use the scale ones.

I use hi-rail wheels because I do a lot of switching. I just couldnt get consistent results with 2r wheels. Too many derailments, I was tired of taking drug tests all the time lol I never have an issue with the hi-rail wheels. Even with my cars, I went back to all high rail wheels.
