Starting this upcoming weekend (June 23 & 24) and the following weekends until July 7&8, Flagg Coal 75 will be operating on the Walkersville Southern RR, just north of Frederick MD and about an hour from both Washington DC and Baltimore.

It will be the first time a steam engine has run in Walkersville since the last steam powered Pennsylvania RR train ran many years ago. Hopefully it is a successful event for a RR that is being crowded more and more by big box stores such as Wegmans and Lowes, both of which are right next to the tracks.

A Railfan event will be held Saturday evening, June 23. I've got a ticket to it and looking forward to it...I'll probably be up at least 2 out of the 3 weekends, if not every weekend since it is only 45 minutes to an hour away from me.

Saw #75 arrived this afternoon in W'ville. Looking forward to seeing it...looks like, from the photo, it will be on the north end of the train which is, from what I've seen over the years, somewhat unusual for WS engines. I have tickets to the Railfan event Saturday night as well as planning on hitching a ride with some National Capital Trackers friends on the 4PM trip Sunday afternoon. Hope it is a successful event and the first of many 75 visits.

Anyhoo, very nice pictures.

It is good to see Steam again.

I'm referring to the busy 4 lane Rt 15 just outside of Frederick on the southern terminus of the RR. The RR parallels the highway for its last 1/4 - 1/2 mile or so.

Did they go all the way down to Wegmans & 26 at the end of track 1/2 mile beyond the crossing? We just replaced 200 ties down there. I tamped it and left town that night .

Jamie,

We went all the way down to the end of the track...We didn't get back into town until 8:30, about a half hour later than originally planned....Thanks to all for a nice time. We'll be on the 4pm trip today as well.

I saw this video on Youtube of one runby last night. Barney Gramling was at the throttle and dragged the brakes for added effect. Wayne Kirchoff (sp?), President of the Railroad, ran the engine just about the entire evening.

Actually that location is the end of a longer grade. Our diesel generally jump there temperature about 20 degrees at that point. I would say our engineers are on the conservative side so they were adding more throttle to get it over the last  hump there. The tight gauge on that curve maybe adding the rail squeak and squawk.

Howard ran the last run yesterday.

Jamie,

The Youtube runby was filmed on the Northern stretch of the RR. Not sure of the name of the Road but it was the first crossing north of the station.

These two unique critters are regular power on the railroad. Note they are both equipped with unique Hancock Air Whistles. Also on the property are two small Plymouths, a 44 Tonner and a 45 Tonner.

#2 came from the Port of Richmond.

#101 is a rare EMD Model 40. According to one volunteer, 11 were made and only 4 or 5 survive. He mentioned he believed theirs was the only one still operating.

Sunday, my daughter's rented the caboose on the 10AM run for my surprise birthday party. We arrived a bit early and when I met 75's owner and he learned I am a BGRR engineer; he invited me up in the cab. I chatted with the crew members for about 10 minutes and then rejoined my family.

My grandkids (girl: 6 1/2, boy's:5 and 2 1/2) are BIG train nuts and really enjoyed the ride: they even got to sit in the cupola with Oma and Opa. At the far end of the trip, the crew held the train for five minutes while the grandkids sang Happy Birthday and we cut and served my birthday cake. A very pleasant ride through some beautiful country.

All the Walkerville and Southern people and the Flagg 75 crew are extrememly friendly and helpful - they really went out of their way to make my birthday a memorable occasion!! My thanks, again, to all of them.

I highly recommend that you take advantage of the opportunity to ride the Walkerville & Southern Steam train while you can!!
