I picked up a "630" the other day, thinking it was like my other 2 examples, but:
This has no brass weights, it doesn't appear to have the paper insert and the plastic body is not only more of a true "red" (the others are more of a reddish-orange), but the light bleeds through:
Is this an unusual piece or simply the first time I've seen one? Thanks!

No, not rare. It looks like a 1947. some 1947's had the paper diffuser, some did not. Just curious, is the lettering silver or white.
If you collect AF caboose's I hope you have a big wall for all the variations

Compared to the other 2, it looks more silver than white. The couplers look rather narrow, with a recessed area and numbers...

Not really; I just like the ones that say simply "Reading", as opposed to "American Flyer/Reading". I suppose that's why I prefer the "0" series steam engines: the "300" Atlantic, "310" K5 and the "320" Hudson... 🙂

Tom You can fill a whole wall on the variations. I am partial to the 300 series, also thats what my dad started me off in , over 60 years ago.
