The upper and lower mountains were made on the work table in the adjacent room. Layers of foam were glued together, the mountain shape carved out with a hot knife, spackling applied, painted and finally scenery added.

Bobby,
The scene looks great! Great job with integrating the mountain in with the backdrop.

Thanks Dave but there is no backdrop. All the mountain scenes are carved foam. There are clouds painted on the walls. Thanks for looking!
Hi Bobby,
I really like what you’ve done with your mountains. Would you be willing to share any more details as to how you created them? Things like glue used, carving tools, painting techniques, etc. I have an area on my layout where I’m trying to decide between a backdrop or building flats. Your mountains look like a good third alternative.

Here are pics of spray foam that I use to glue the pieces of foam together, the hot knife used to carve the foam, pics of foam panels used to model mountains and other scenery. I use regular latex paint starting with a base cost of dark gray followed with black wash and other acrylic highlight colors ( brown, green, red, blue, etc.). Most landscaping materials are from Scenic Express. Trees are from Grand Central Gems.

Bobby,
Thanks for the additional photos and tool description. I like the way you’ve used both layering and landscaping to enhance the feeling of depth.
