Was it double track all the way? I ask because some of the single track stretches in WV appear to not have the space for 2 tracks.

No, it was not double track all the way there is a lot of single track through Virginia too. However, from an operating point of view, once the C&O acquired the former Richmond & Allegheny that ran along the James River from Richmond to Clifton Forge, Va. (also single track w/sidings) with some stretch of the imagination the Richmond to Clifton segment could (in a way) be considered to be double track as loads went down the river and empties returned over the mountain (via Waynesboro, Va.).
Thanks. Its a beautiful line. I hope traffic pics up on it.
On the Rivanna Sub...and Im sure at other places...you can see odd spreads in the double track at grade crossings. Also raised signal boxes on platforms. What is the purpose of this. I have attached a pic of Goochland VA.

Mike,
I can't help you on that one. My interest in the C&O is very very localized. Maybe you could try and ask someone at the C&O Hist.Soc.

What is the purpose of the signal box or why is it raised? It's raised to keep it out of the James River floodwaters.
That explains it. But there is still the issue with the two tracks spreading apart at many of he grade crossings.
Do western derived coal trains not run through on the former C&O as they do the NS through Atlanta?
