Is there any specific ordering of freight car types in a typical mixed consist? From what I see from films of the 1950's reefers are usually first and tank cars follow then its mixed up after that.

Generally it depended on the blocking of the train, i.e. which blocks of cars might be set-out or interchanged enroll first. Many time that was why reefers were at the headend of mixed freight trains. Plus, there was a general effort to have the heaviest loaded cars towards the headend of a train, if practical.
