Yes, there are!  Both UP and BNSF serve the Phoenix area.  UP (the old SP) now mainly comes into town from the east from the main line at Picacho through Mesa and Tempe to a yard east of downtown.  The BNSF comes from the  main line junction at Williams through Wickenburg and parallels Grand Avenue to a yard to the west of downtown.

well lets see BNSF  has a mainline that basically terminates at 19th ave and w. mcdowell rd in phoenix,az. it also is where the engine service and storage tracks are they have a interchange track for dropping off/picking up freight cars with Union Pacific at it's yard that from memory I believe starts about 7th ave below madison ave.

Union Pacific most of its freight trains uses a cutoff about 30 miles south of the metro phoenix area and heads to Gila Bend,Az and heads to California. last I knew there are a few freight trains that do come to the Union Pacific yard in phoenix,az they and BNSF do have switching crews dropping off and picking up freight cars.

as to freight trains running straight thru phoenix not to my knowledge. BNSF has a large and just expanded inter-modal yard off grand ave between w. bethany home rd and goes south to w. camelback rd. above bethany home rd is a large holding yard for the double stacks and mixed freight cars heading out of town and also mixed freight originates in phoenix area.

BNSF has a large auto unloading yard off grand ave in El Mirage,az, it used to be near the inter model-yard but they moved out some time ago to the above location.

Not sure about Phoenix but about 100 miles Southwest the Union Pacific runs thru Yuma, AZ. Heres some action of a UP freight heading South to Yuma maybe from Phoenix area.

The original Southern Pacific "Sunset Route" main line goes through Yuma, but not through Phoenix. The line to Phoenix came off the main line east of Phoenix and then rejoined the main line west of Phoenix. I'm not sure if the whole "Phoenix branch" is still all intact, once the UP took over the SP. It would probably only be used for freight today.

I've wondered since i first created the Altland Phoenix Western Railroad

is there really freight trains in phoenix az

my friend bridget whom the railroad is named for and she is from phoenix said there is no freight trains in phoenix

is she right or wrong

She is wrong.  Freight trains go through PHX all the time!

Here's a yard just south of downtown.  BNSF has trackage along Grand Ave. that is always full of trains coming and going.  Nearer my house in Mesa there are always freight trains going past (Lots of autoracks.), and that comes out of PHX.
