Searching my files for photos, but we have four MTH yard lights in our through yard. They look nice, but realistically, they're more for decoration than light output. If you can get LED bulbs to replace the incandescent ones, they'd probably throw a lot more light. One of these days we'll get around to changing to LEDs.
Spence did you buy the Lionel lights as 16 or did you combined 2 eight light kits to make one?
Yup,I did notice them, they were nice
For me they all seem out of scale. I'm going to make my own. Don
Here is a pic of my yard with the Lionel 6-12759 tower lights and you will notice all my switches have a double headed Lionel 6-12927 #65 Yard light. It works pretty well. My table with overhead lights out looks like a night time scene, not bright, but workable.
I use a combination of Lionel 395 flood light towers and those Mars two bulb flood towers - the ones that always seem to show up at the train shows.

I like this style Marx Towers.
Well thanks for all the ideas so far. Sure don't want to make them but so far I am thinking like scale rail.

Hello Clem, around my engine house which has several tracks and sidings I used the Lionel 6-37995 Lighted Telephone Poles.
With these poles spaced out they lighted this area very realistically.
To me the light from each pole is just enough to light an area without being to much light.
They don't take much power to operate either.

I bought those this summer but they are too short, my yard tracks are too close together. I hope to use them at my power plant or industrial area. I think they look good.

When I was a brakeman for the Quanah, Acme & Pacific, our yard at Quanah had NO lights (except for our lanterns). It may have gone back to the WWII days when blackout mentality was everywhere. I don't remember any lights in the SLSF Oklahoma City yard either. It was just DARK.
I think it is great that your O gauge switchmen will be able to see on the midnight job, but no lighting in the yard is very prototypical.

Clem, I used a combination of Lionel floodlight and spotlight towers along with several gooseneck lamps for my yard illumination. I'm very happy with the results.
