I recently purchased a Weaver FA-2 online from a reputable train dealer. Even though it's older it was NIB. It has QSI-OEM electronics. I lubed it and powered it up to charge the battery per the instructions. While on the powered track the front coupler thumbtack touched the center rail and caused a short. Flash, smoke, and the smell of burnt electronics! I had not noticed the loose (drooping) front coupler. So now it sits on the track and does nothing, no sound and no movement. Are replacement QSI boards available, or is my only option a TMCC upgrade? The good news is I am only $85 invested at this point.

Thanks! Tom

One item you neglected to tell us is the type of drive it has. Up until early new century, Weaver ALCo Rs3, Fa's and GP38 had the scale Pittman motor horizontal drive. After the new century, Weaver models turned to the dual motor set-up. Which do you have as space could be an issue with the original horizontal drive.

Yes qsi boards can only be found on the secondary market, but you are better off with the err boards and railsounds- esp if you have the dual motor set-up.

Also with the dual motor set-up, you could add PS3.

I can't recall the engine other than it was modern, with sounds, and board type e-unit, but my pals Weavers wouldn't run on tmcc at all. He came by and they ran on all my conventional transformers just fine. Even the AF 18b that my tmcc throws fits on. (they whistle randomly every few seconds, and at some point stays stuck, whistle on)

"That smell" likely speaks volumes, but look at the board, motors, etc. you may be surprised.

"but my pals Weavers run on tmcc at all."

Well, first of all, it has to have the TMCC electronics in the engine. TMCC is the command system.

Many early electronic boards will not run on modern transformers; waveforms and all that.

ERR (Electric Rail Road) sells all the boards, conventional and/or command, that you need. You do not have to go to Command (TMCC), but an ERR Cruise Commander (and sound, if you would like) makes those Weaver FA-2's really sweet. Check the website. Easy upgrade in that loco, also.

I have a Weaver FA-2 B unit. It has sound but I can't make it move. I am running a ZW-C transformer with 2 180W Power blocks. I Have a Lionel PM-1 with a CAB-1 remote. I can get it to sound the bell and horn but no move. When I first hooked it all up the bell would work with the bell button on the ZW and the horn on whistle control. The bell now works on whistle and the horn blows on bell. The horn and bell work off the CAB-1 also but no move. I have  instructions for the Weaver, I have tried the switches under the unit in different configurations but still no move. All my train gear is older Lionel until I bought the diesels. I am new to this ZW and the CAB-1 PM-1. My PM-1 is the type with the crystal sticking out. The line that goes to the transformer has 2 wires with a fuse. I put the fuse line to A and the other to the U. The other end is the type that plugs into the PM-1. 2 wires coming from the PM-1 A to center rail and U to the outside rail thru a lighted MTH lock-on. Can anyone help? I am building this layout for the Grandchildren and myself. The 3 grandsons and myself are the only ones who has an interest. Thank you all for your time.
