Why is Lionel and many venders sold out of the Legacy command set #990? Is there a new product on the horizon?

no, they just sell fast and Lionel can not make them fast enough.
They were unavailable for close to 2 years, so when the recent release hit the market, they were snapped up. More are expected in February, in the meantime call around. i would imagine some of the smaller dealers may have a few
A lot of it this time is due to them not being available for a long while, so there was pent up demand, everyone that's been wanting one but couldn't get one bought them. Unless it takes forever again to release the next batch, they should sell out slower, and keep selling out slower until the demand is met on the market.
Even larger dealers still have some. I got an ad from Trainworld yesterday saying they still had some.
Several have sold on eBay in the last couple of days for $295 new and even less for used. They're available, just look around.
grzyboskitrains shows new, in stock for 289.95. May want to email to confirm it is in stock. I have never used them before so I don't know if "in stock" actually means "in stock". Seems some sites show in stock until you get the confirmation email.
