We are working up an old O scale kit of a gas electric, very similar to our Great Northern gas electric, built in 1925 by EMC. My buddy is looking for some sort of model of an engine/prime mover, maybe even the exact 6-cylinder Winton gas engine it has. Any help would be appreciated in finding a suitable model of a prime mover.

Thanks for your help.

get one of the reproduction parts of Lionel's motor casting. I looked extensively for a prime mover part for my own Brill project and it was all I could come up with. It's a decent starting point. The piece has the prime mover engine with a generator attached. You can then detail it as you wish.

I don't know about the GN car, but the Brill 660 version also had a small 'exciter' engine to generate enough power to turn over the big Winton. I found a small engine part for that once online.

A good place to look is the old marine engine field, like Sterling, Hall-Scott or Standard Motor, for example. The usual massively overbuilt beasts that folks like us love, hooked up to a generator of some kind. The same type of engine was tried in mechanical drives, with differing success rates, depending on the arrangement. (McKeen cars were one example)

Just exactly what are we talking about? Not sure I understand what you mean as to Lionels motor casting.

this is the part I refer to. the boxlike piece on the right is a separate piece and is not used. most of the reproduction parts sellers will have this piece. they are cast in various color plastic.

with this as a base, you can detail out your prime mover. in most cases, the generator end faced forward.
