Now that you have some experience with things working you might try the old PC again? Might be nice to have it just as an extra for train related use or music or something down by your layout.

Don't hear/see any reasons why the updating software would not work on a standard PC running WIN 7 with the updated drivers from Mr. Softee. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. Hours of messing around trying various sequences sometimes hit on the right one and works; other times not. Sometimes it works the next day, sometimes not. End result: stopped updating at 4.3 .... good enough for my needs. 41 years in IT says "flakey software" ...
