I just got the Scott Mann Update that he is announcing GGD Amfleet phase 1 cars! Now if they can do BEACH GROVE I would be in!

I would think your best chances at seeing that would be to order some of the Amfleets he has already announced and show that Amtrak offerings are viable for GGD to continue to consider.
Mind if I do a bit of thread hijacking? Are pretty much all GGD cars 21" long?

They are, if the prototype car is an 85 foot car. The up-comming Southern Pacific "Harriman" passenger cars will not be 21" long as the prototype cars were NOT 85 feet long.
Rest in Piece credit card.... this one is gonna hurt.
I have a valid question.... Northeast Direct on Phase IV or not? Metroliner logo on the cafe car in phase III? If not, can we get an add on Metroliner cafe in Phase III?
Will these be nickel plated or just painted?
645 posted:As for GGD doing the 10001 I highly doubt it as it is an one-off unless you and a few hundred others will commit to buying same. Did you also notice the 10001 has the larger Amfleet II sized windows at the observation end? Compare it to the other windows and the Amfleet I car seen in the background of the above image. The factory Scott uses does not like too many variations. For example on the upcoming E8/9 diesels it was not possible to delete the portholes on the Amtrak version which should be an easy change compared to how different 10001 is from a standard Amfleet car.
There is a huge difference in deleting portholes in a plastic injection mold and a punch tool for aluminum extrusions.

They will be painted.
As for the different decorations/logos, etc, from standard... all it will require is a minimum number of reservations of that type and you can get whatever you want.
Wow... that was fast. We just talked about it last night and I thought I was supposed to be keeping a secret! I guess I should have checked my email earlier.
As to the various specialized paint schemes, which are largely decal changes, that is to be determined and as always orders will determine what gets produced. There is the question of phase IV versus phase IVb schemes too. The nice part about doing Amfleet I cars to start is that they are very straight forward in exterior configuration. Should it be successful there could be future opportunities with this tooling for other models.
I'm in for at least 8. One Cafe and 7 coaches in Phase III. Finally equipment for my FL9s and F40Phs.

I'd prefer IVb with the new logo as opposed to straight Phase IV. But again... cafes with Northeast Regional logos or not?
I would not be the least bit surprised if I ended up with 2 or 3 sets of these... given how long I've been asking for them, and the pile of engines I have that can use them. Definitely phase III, I'm torn between phase I or II, and I would go for a IVb set if it was available (but its my understanding you need a license for the new servicemark logo?).
Also... can I get the Amfleet sleeper?
Who will be the first to ask for the Acela Blotch?
If you guys need the car number changes, I have the By the Numbers book with all of the numbers throughout the years. Email in profile if you need info.

This is an awesome announcement! Very exciting, I have an Amtrak fl9 too... but I'm confused about 1 thing. The 5 car set has a club, a dinette, and a cafe?? What's the differences between these 3 cars. I would want just 1 food service car and 4 coaches in phase III are you able to reserve just 1 food service type car?
thank you,
With only cars 22900 and 22901 being converted to partial sleepers for testing of the bedrooms for Superliner use and then being converted back in 1979, that may be one you would have to kitbash yourself.
...... and I don't care what anyone says. NO on the Acela blotch or stain or whatever that is supposed to be!

thank you,
This announcement came together rather quickly. Just some clarification is needed on the website. The cars shown on the website was simply the paint schemes that would be offered, not what the set would consist of. The base set should be a single food service car (club, dinette, or cafe to be determined) and four coaches, one of which might or might not be be business class.
I sent an email to Scott just now conveying this information and reserved the base set plus three extra coaches. That's the way to move this project forward!
And to clarify the food service car configurations, Amfleet I Cafes, Club Cars and Dinettes were all the same on the exterior. Cafes has 53 coach seats, Club Cars had 18 club seats and 23 coach seats, while dinettes had 8 booths and 23 coach seats.

Oh ok great, I did not know that. I used to ride amtraks maple leaf express to Toronto back in the late 90's and that train has the dinette.
Very exciting announcement and this will be a winner for GGD!
I wonder if Scott will be making any locomotives to go with these amfleets - like the Amtrak E60?
Part of me wonders what an ACE 3000 would look like in Phase 3.....
Amtrak E60! I'm in

Asking for some of those specialty paint jobs may depend which one you pick....
A bit nitpicky for the first day, but the rebuilding brought blue interiors in place of the dark red originals.... will the phase IV cars have blue interiors? and the rest with the dark red (bonus point for the pattern in the seat centers)
Again, there is so much to figure out on this project, but I would simply be guessing that the dinette might be the winner as many of the rebuilds featured booths and seat combinations, plus it offers variety on the interior. When I was riding the Broadway Limited regularly from 1988-1992 the train would either have a Heritage Lounge or an Amfleet dinette. Some of the Heritage coaches were substituted with Amfleet coaches also.
For interior color, that shouldn't be a big deal. I've ridden on them in both colors and in all the phases with the exception of phase IV.
These are plastic cars not aluminum. They are painted. Even our Aluminum cars are painted because it give you a more consistent durable finish. And 21" is a toy train term, not a scale model term. These are scale.
We will open up reservations of each food service car. Still the sets will include all 3 food service cars. Looks like the Beech Grove car will be a great kitbash project to do from one of these coaches.
Thanks for all your suggestions. That's what makes these projects happen.

Nitpicky....I want time period specific passenger figures in my amfleets!
I'm some combination of amazed and excited that these are being offered. It must be 3 years that I've been asking for full scale length amfleets and being told some combination of no, and they won't sell. Forgive my machine gunning of questions, some of it is just playing around, and kudos to you guys for convincing Scott to give it a go.
I had no expectation of the sleepers.... you and me might be 20% people that know they even exist.
But on the serious side.... I'm probably gonna order about 20 of them, so some questions are asked with my wallet in mind.... and it doesnt take too much deduction to figure out that if you have a mold for the tube, then making Metroliners is not much of a leap... so add several thousand more to the bill.
I've started de-skirting/reworking some atlas CZ cars for HEP rebuilds and was wondering what I was going to do for coaches. I finally have my solution. Mix and match train is high on my list.
I'm looking forward to having some fun here....
In Time....
I'm with you. I am going to work on recreating the Broadway Limited I rode on so often. Two F40 PHs, 3 materials handling cars, Heritage baggage, crew dorm, 4 coaches in both Heritage and Amfleet, Amfleet Food Service Car, Diner, Slumbercoach, and usually a 10-6 or 11 bedroom sleeper behind that. That's just one train I have in mind.
The FL9s will look great with the correct cars behind them too.
I also need to rebuild my Atlas AEM7 for the straight 8 car Clocker, build an HEP car out of a cheap plastic 18" coach so I can use the cars with a GG1. I have an HHP8 and a P42, not sure if I should add Phase IV cars too.
Shoot, I may have to modify my order already!
Scott,
Unfortunately,I am not going for these cars--they don't go with my era. But,you sure are making things very exciting for us. It looks like you have another winner,Scott. Thank you for the great products and service that you provide . I can't wait for "your next round of announcements".
Norm
J.C. Studios should make available for sale their interior stickers to detail the interior better.
i think there are many people who have been waiting for some scale amfleets for a long time. Scott I think you hit another home run here
Scott,
Awesome announcement! Would love to see IVb as mentioned above offered vs just IV. I would be in for a set as well as some additional coaches.

Thanks HW. As I feared. 21" just do not look good on O72. I have some K-Line 0-88, but then I would have another item that is stuck to the outer loop, and I don't need any more of those.
Very cool! I run much Amtrak, but it's great to see a long desired wish list item for many fulfilled.
I have pre ordered 4 cars. I would order a 5th car but for what I want to do it doesnt work out. I am ordering 2 cars in phase one, and 2 cars in phase 3. (1 cafe and 1 coach) . I would really like one more phase 3 coach. My plan is to mix these with existing GGD slumbercoach and Atlas Heritage & Horizon cars in the two different schemes. I need to watch the budget and space, thus do not need to over order with a 5 car set plus 2 extras...as much as I might like to!
Viewliners would really compliment these!!

Clockers usually got an E60 for power - I saw them plenty of times on the NEC. AEM7's were pretty rare on Clockers and by the time the E60's were retired the Clockers also were on the way to being phased out as well.
Would love to see the shorty ex-Army baggage cars done as well:
Some were later rebuilt as HEP power cars:
You can see one of the ex-Army power cars behind the GG1 with Amfleet in Phase I trailing behind in the below image:
As for the thread topic I may be in for Phase I Amcoach and Amcafe - 1975 is pushing my era slightly but just slips in. Will think about it...
I like those HEP cars..... this is making me think to get some phase I cars now. I have the Lionel PC black jack GG1 to pull them. Decisions decisions.......

But not so much an accurate representation of stainless steel.
Wow $1,000 for an Amfleet set?, I think I'll just stick with my 4 northeast directs for now. JEEZ
You can find a review of them down below,

There were also e8b units that became HEP cars. Easier to fudge considering current market availability

Please remember that you are posting on the 3-Rail SCALE Forum, thus you "less expensive" cars are NOT "scale"!

No kidding! I can get an mth or weaver B unit for like $100 bucks. Even if I gotta paint it that's worth it.

Argument over. Are you prepared for $100+/car additional.
I have 7 aluminum GGD sets plus a lot of plastic cars from them...... worth every penny. Enough said. If you want quality amfleets, for $200ea you will not be disappointed.
Some phase 3 Slumbercoaches to run with these would go well!
